The streets of DC just got a little safer, as the Metropolitan Police Department announced the arrest of a man they say is behind a brazen robbery in Northwest Washington. According to a statement from MPD, detectives slapped the cuffs on 37-year-old David Romero, pinning him down for an assault and robbery that left one victim reeling.
A week ago, an innocent night out turned sour when a victim, whose evening had been spent in the 3800 block of 14th Street NW, was accosted by two assailants. The violent encounter, occurring under the cover of darkness around 12:04 a.m. on May 24, saw the victim overpowered and divested of their belongings. Romero, a man without a fixed address, is now facing charges for his alleged role in this crime.
It took diligent detective work, but the breakthrough came on May 31 when the MPD made their move. Romero was arrested and they're charging him with robbery, trying to ensure he pays his debts to society. Details of the arrest were not immediately disclosed, but the department credits the investigative work for helping to bring the suspect into custody.
Violent crime, particularly robbery, casts a long shadow over the community, leaving residents and visitors alike looking over their shoulders. With arrests like this one, the police hope to shine a light on those responsible for perpetuating the cycle of fear and theft, and perhaps, offer some reprieve to those who walk the streets with the burden of vigilance heavy upon them.
