Tenants and landlords across Minneapolis looking for guidance on housing rights and responsibilities have a new resource at their disposal, with the city hosting a Renter Rights Resource Fair. The event took place on Tuesday, June 4, at the Minneapolis Public Service Building, offering attendees a chance to connect with various local organizations and government agencies, according to the City of Minneapolis.
The fair, which ran from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., was a chance for those in attendance, to seek personalized help and participate in a presentation at 12:30 p.m. by HOME Line, a nonprofit tenant advocacy agency. "Whether you’ve rented here your entire life, are a college student or an immigrant, the City offers critical resources and is here to support you," said Demetrice Walker, as stated by the City of Minneapolis, manager of the Housing Liaison Team in Regulatory Services, emphasizing the fair's inclusive nature.
More than a dozen entities including the Minnesota Attorney General’s Office, Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid, and Urban League Twin Cities were on hand, dedicated to ensuring that tenants and property owners alike are informed about their rights and duties. Spanish, Somali, and Hmong interpreters facilitated communication for Minneapolis's diverse resident pool, while a free meal served as an additional draw for community members.
The city appears to prioritize the well-being of its renting population, which encompasses over half of its residents. "In recent years, the City Council has continued to approve greater protections for Minneapolis renters," as per the City of Minneapolis. Efforts like the “Know Your Renting Rights” campaign launched in 2023, and resource fairs bolster these initiatives, as Josie Shardlow, Director of Operations and Engagement for Regulatory Services, indicated when she shared that the event reflects the importance of "community-centered education."
