The State of Minnesota is sending a clear message to motorists: buckle up or pay up. The latest Click It or Ticket campaign, which ran from May 20 through June 2, resulted in law enforcement officials issuing 1,922 seat belt citations and 108 child restraint citations. Officers, deputies, and troopers from 272 agencies collaborated in this initiative, aimed at addressing the persistent issue of unbelted drivers and passengers on Minnesota roads.

Comparatively, the latest numbers show a decline from the 2,382 seat belt citations and 130 child seat citations handed out in 2023. According to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) Director Mike Hanson, the reasoning behind the law enforcement push is straightforward, “Enforcing the seat belt law is not about writing tickets — it's about saving lives," Hanson said. "If any of the more than 1,900 people cited had been in a crash, they may not be here today. It's easy, it's smart, and it's the law. Wear your seat belt and get home safe."

The campaign included several notable enforcement stops. For example, Hastings police issued a citation to a woman who opted for a chest baby carrier instead of a proper child restraint for her infant. Meanwhile, a Douglas County sheriff’s deputy arrested a driver for DWI and drug possession after a stop was initiated due to a lack of seat belt use. In another instance, a driver pulled over by South Lake Minnetonka police commented, “If I'm meant to die, I'll die," when questioned about his decision not to wear a seat belt.

Within the Twin Cities metro area, the Minnesota State Patrol in the west metro region topped the list with 178 seat belt citations, followed by the St. Paul Police Department issuing 170, and the east metro region of the State Patrol with 88. The campaign's reach extended beyond the metro areas, evidenced by citations reported throughout the state, for instance, the Minnesota State Patrol in the Virginia region issued 160 citations, while in the Rochester region officers wrote up 116 citations. The full list of participating agencies points to the comprehensive nature of the campaign, with a broad geographic spread across the state’s law enforcement bodies engaging in the initiative.

Preliminary traffic safety data underscore the importance of such enforcement actions. In 2023, 84 unbelted motorists died on Minnesota's roads, a slight decrease from the 87 fatalities recorded in 2022 and the 110 in 2021. While observational surveys show that over 90 percent of front seat occupants are wearing seat belts, the Click It or Ticket campaign serves as a stark reminder that the state is serious about reaching that small percentage who fail to buckle up. Minnesota's law mandates all drivers and passengers to use seat belts or be in an appropriate child restraint — a simple yet critical measure designed to safeguard lives on the road.
