MinnesotaCare, the health coverage program for residents with lower incomes, is reinstating monthly premiums after a pause during the pandemic. This change is set to impact around 46,000 enrollees who will need to start to gradually reintroduce themselves to the routine of making these payments if they wish to maintain their insurance. According to a statement from the Minnesota Department of Human Services, the first bills are due on June 13.
"MinnesotaCare serves Minnesotans facing financial struggles, so we want them to know about the return of this monthly bill," said Human Services Commissioner Jodi Harpstead. These words reflect the department's effort to remind the community of the impending financial obligation. Enrollees are not left without a safety net, however, as they will receive a grace month of coverage before losing their insurance if they fail to pay on time.
The reinstatement of premiums follows a suspension that was introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic, an act providing economic relief to earners with the lowest incomes. The Department of Human Services indicates that some Minnesotans will continue to benefit from either no premium or reduced premiums through the end of 2025, thanks to the federal Inflation Reduction Act. The premium pause that commenced during the health crisis continued throughout 2023 as the state reengaged with annual checks for eligibility.
The process for calculating and paying premiums is accessible via the DHS website, where enrollees can employ a Premium Estimator Table to determine their monthly dues. Meanwhile, those seeking assistance or more detailed information can call the DHS Health Care Consumer Support or visit their MinnesotaCare premiums page.
For Minnesotans who might have fallen out of the habit of paying premiums, or for those newly navigating the landscape of healthcare coverage, the DHS underscores the importance of meeting these financial deadlines. Failing to pay could result in canceled insurance, and to regain coverage, individuals would need to settle the past-dioxide and a premium for the forthcoming month of service.
