A Monroe, N.C., woman was handed a 36-month prison term for embezzling nearly $2.3 million from her employer, as confirmed by the Western District of North Carolina's U.S. Attorney's Office. Kristy Lawrence, 45, faced the court's decision on account of her involvement in a fraudulent scheme running from 2016 through April 2022, during which she systematically diverted funds from a small family-run business where she was in charge of accounting duties.
The case, underscored by a collaborative law enforcement effort, saw Lawrence ordered to not only serve out her sentence but also pay back $2,224,086 in restitution. The Federal Bureau of Investigation's Charlotte Division and the Union County Sheriff's Office were instrumental in the investigation, Special Agent in Charge Robert M. DeWitt, and Sheriff Eddie Cathey stood with U.S. Attorney Dena J. King as she announced the sentence. King's statement outlined Lawrence's misuse of position to conduct unauthorized electronic transfers, swinging the company's finances to cover her own expenses.
Lawrence's fraudulent actions came to light following her extended leave, when an employee who stepped in to fill her role uncovered discrepancies. Court documents revealed how she exploited her position, making false entries and falsifying documents to perpetuate her scheme. Her activities inflicted not only economic but emotional damages on the business and its employees, a point that the Court took into consideration during sentencing.
After her guilty plea to wire fraud back on December 19, 2023, Lawrence has remained free on bond. She awaits the designation of a federal facility where she will serve her sentence, as per the statement released by the U.S. Attorney's Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Daniel Ryan was recognized for his work on the prosecution of the case. The financial integrity of our institutions rests on the shoulders of those we entrust, and when that trust is broken, the consequences, as seen in Lawrence's case, affirm the justice system's commitment to retribution and restitution.
