Commuters using Interstate 476 should brace for potential delays as PennDOT kicks off nighttime construction work next week. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is embarking on a $63.7 million initiative aimed at resurfacing and enhancing nearly 17 miles of highways and associated structures between West Conshohocken Borough in Montgomery County and Ridley Township in Delaware County.
According to the announcement, from Monday, June 17, through Friday, June 21, sections of northbound and southbound I-476 will experience lane closures. These will take place from 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, specifically between the I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) and I-95 interchanges, as per the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. Officials are encouraging drivers to allocate extra time when navigating the work zones since backups and delays are on the table. The schedule, however, is contingent upon the cooperation of the weather.
The scope of the PennDOT project is expansive. Crews will mill and overlay the I-476 travel lanes and shoulders, conduct maintenance on 49 structures, and upgrade 21 stormwater management basins. Additionally, improvements will include rock slope stabilization, guide rail replacement, inlet repair at certain locations, and the installation of new pavement markings, delineators, rumble strips, signage, and guide rail. All of these efforts converge on the broader objective of enhancing the safety, ride quality, and longevity of this critical stretch of interstate.
