An Horry County Police Department vehicle struck and killed a woman on a South Carolina beach, with the officer now on administrative leave during the ongoing investigation. According to a report by WBTV, the deceased has been identified as 66-year-old Sandra “Sandy” Schultz-Peters of Myrtle Beach by Horry County Deputy Coroner Michelle McSpadden.
While coming from the Nash Street beach access last Thursday, the vehicle turned onto the sand and struck Schultz-Peters, which was confirmed by SCHP. HCPD's statement acknowledged the tragedy, stating, "What occurred on the beach yesterday was a tragedy and we know our community is hurting. Our hearts are with all those impacted by this loss." A man witnessing the incident described by Nexstar's WBTW the scene as chaotic, recounting how he heard someone yell about a person being run over, leading to the discovery of Schultz-Peters injured under the truck.
LCpl. Julian Brown was revealed as the officer involved in the fatal incident by the South Carolina Highway Patrol. A report by WMBF News details that Brown has been a part of HCPD since 1988 and has been recognized in the past for significant contributions to beach safety and the junior lifeguard program in Myrtle Beach. His administrative leave will be in effect while the SCHP conducts their investigation into the matter.
Following the unfortunate incident, the Horry County Police Department is conducting both an external and internal investigation to ensure they go "without delay or interference." A statement obtained by WBTV includes the department's commitment to supporting the community and the family affected by this "tragic loss." The South Carolina Highway Patrol has not released any additional details about the accident as their investigation continues with the aid of aerial drone footage gathered near the site of the accident on Friday.
