If you're planning a trip to Cabrillo National Monument this summer, be prepared to skip the Old Point Loma Lighthouse on your itinerary. The historic landmark, an emblem of San Diego's maritime history since 1855, is sealed off to visitors until the end of August for some much-needed TLC, FOX 5 San Diego reports.
The National Park Service has rolled up its sleeves to start restoration work on the lighthouse's battered exterior – a job that includes stripping away paint that's seen better days, mending aging masonry, fixing metal features that have weathered many a sea storm, and popping in new window sashes to replace the old timers that just can't hack it anymore. According to the Times of San Diego, this project aims to maintain "the structural integrity of the building and preserve it for future visitors".
It's not just any crew tackling this preservation effort. The NPS Historic Preservation Crew, known for their knack for keeping the past in fighting shape for the future, are the ones on the ground, meticulously making sure the lighthouse keeps its place as a must-see spot for San Diego visitors. "The National Park Service is dedicated to the preservation of America's most treasured places, stories and structures," Chris Rodriguez, superintendent of Cabrillo National Monument, emphasized, as per the Times of San Diego.
Rodriguez also highlighted the prominent role of parkgoers in this renovation rodeo. Believe it or not, those entrance fee dollars you fork over aren't just getting you a day of breathtaking views and historical nuggets – they're funneling straight into projects like this keeping the park's crown jewels sparkling. But visitors, won't be left high and dry whilst the lighthouse gets buffed to a shine. Other park areas, including the whale overlook and the new Oceanside Trail, will remain accessible. Just take the walking path on the east side of the lighthouse – and don't fret over the two accessible parking spots that have vanished for the moment. They, like the lighthouse, will be back before you know it.
