Brace yourselves, commuters—nighttime travel on Philly's I-76 West is about to get a bit dicey. PennDOT has slated a milling and paving project that aims to smooth over nearly five miles of the notoriously bumpy Schuylkill Expressway, with work beginning next week.
From June 24 to June 28, heads up for lane closures from 9:00 PM to the wee hours of 6:00 AM, as reported by PennDOT. The majority of the work will focus on westbound I-76 between Montgomery Drive and U.S. 1 South (City Avenue)—so plan accordingly, and perhaps have that second cup of Joe ready if you'll be navigating this area after dark.
What's it all for, you ask? PennDOT is investing a cool $36.8 million to not only resurface and repair the road's concrete but also to address over 20 bridges in need of maintenance. Once the orange cones are gone, drivers can expect new signs, pavement markings, and rumble strips as well.
An unfortunate side dish to this main course of improvements: delays are inevitable. PennDOT recommends allowing extra time, for the journey as instant gratification is not on the menu for these evening excursions. The project's timeline, like all things tied to Mother Nature, is at the mercy of the weather.
But let's not forget the light at the end of the tunnel—better driving days ahead, smoother rides, and maybe fewer spilled coffees on your way to wherever life takes you. For now, patience is key during these nighttime journeys through Philadelphia's main roads.
