
San Bruno experienced a tense situation unfold on its streets this past Sunday when police engaged with a man barricaded inside a car, leading to a two-hour standoff. The event, which did not escalate into an officer-involved shooting, ended peacefully with the suspect's surrender.
According to a statement from the San Bruno Police Department, the incident started at around 5:54 p.m. on the 800 block of Huntington Ave. A victim reported an unknown individual in his vehicle, and upon responding, two officers found a male seated in the backseat. The commands issued by law enforcement to exit the vehicle were met with refusal, leading to the prolonged stalemate.
The situation was diffused by utilizing the special training and equipment at the disposal of the San Bruno Police. Officers with Crisis Negotiation Training (CNT), an Unmanned Aerial-System (UAS), and Police K9 Niko worked to negotiate with the suspect. Their efforts concluded at approximately 8:08 p.m. when a 38-year-old male from South San Francisco surrendered without further incident.
The standoff could have taken a perilous turn but was resolved without injuries. The department, seeking to maintain community trust and transparency, clarified that no shooting took place during the encounter. The suspect, whose name was not released at the time, was booked on charges of burglary, resisting arrest, and an outstanding felony warrant.
