Major traffic signal upgrades are set to interrupt the regular flow of vehicles at the bustling intersection of Roosevelt Boulevard, Adams Avenue, and Summerdale Avenue in Philadelphia this Saturday, June 8. Streets Commissioner Kristin Del Rossi confirmed that improvements aim to enhance motorist and pedestrian safety, in an effort that aligns with the city's Vision Zero initiatives. Motorists should brace for detours and allow for extra travel time as the intersection undergoes a two-phase closure, starting early in the morning.
As detailed in a recent announcement from the Streets Department, phase one of the operation will completely shut down Roosevelt Boulevard's NB & SB Outer Lanes, while the inner lanes will remain accessible. Adams Avenue westbound and Summerdale Avenue eastboard traffic will also cease to cross Roosevelt Boulevard, with detours leading drivers around the construction.
The second phase follows a similar pattern, closing the inner lanes of Roosevelt Boulevard and rerouting the same stretches of Adams and Summerdale Avenues. This meticulous work is necessary for the switch from old to new traffic signal equipment, removing outdated infrastructure as part of a significant $4.5 million project, financed by PennDOT State Grants and executed by James J. Anderson Construction.
Disruptions are inevitable despite efforts to minimize them by the Streets Department. The department encourages residents to plan their routes in advance or find alternative pathways during the transition phase. The new configurations, expected to be operational by Saturday night, signal a stride towards safeguarding citizens on some of Philadelphia's busiest roadways. The work being done is not only a mechanical enhancement but also a pledge for the community's wellbeing.
