The skies over Philadelphia are showing a moody disposition this morning but, it's all about to clear up. The city kicked off the day under a veil of clouds which is expected to give way to sunshine as the day progresses, with temperatures peaking at a balmy 88 degrees. Winds will keep things feeling fresh, blowing from the northwest at a gentle 5 to 10 mph. The humidity, resting at a slightly oppressive 84%, will hopefully ease as the mercury rises, according to the National Weather Service.
Philly residents looking forward to a comfortable night will be in for a treat. The NWS forecasts a mostly clear sky, with tonight's lows hovering around a pleasant 67 degrees and north winds keeping up at around 10 mph. From NWS Philadelphia, "Tonight Mostly clear, with a low around 67. North wind around 10 mph."
Friday brings more sunshine and a slightly cooler high of 84, with a gentle northeast breeze that's set to swing southeast in the afternoon. That peace is, however, short-lived. Saturday's forecast throws a curveball with a 50% chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 pm, so locals might want to keep their umbrellas at hand. The day's heat is expected to match today's, but with added humidity to ramp up the discomfort.
And there's more wet weather ahead for the weekend, with the likelihood of showers and storms increasing to 60% on Saturday night—mostly between 8 p.m. and 2 a.m. Despite the potential disruption, the nighttime temperature won't cool down much, sticking around a steamy 78 degrees. "Saturday night, showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly between 8pm and 2am," the NWS cautions. It looks like the rain might come in both a dribble and a downpour, with new rainfall amounts ranging from a modest tenth to a more drenching quarter of an inch.
On Sunday, Philadelphians will see a mix of clouds and sun with a continued 50% chance of thunderstorms before the weather clears up again heading into the new week. Take note of the climb in temperature—a high near 91 degrees is forecast. But the start of the workweek promises calmer skies. Monday and Tuesday are set to be sunny with high temperatures in the mid-80s, and as the week rolls on, Wednesday looks to heat up again to around 90 degrees under more sunny skies.
