A Middle Township police officer was left in critical but stable condition after a suspected impaired driver struck him during a traffic stop on Route 47 South late Friday night, according to authorities. Patrolman Austin Kapurelos was conducting the stop on Wildwood Boulevard when the collision happened shortly after 10 p.m., and he was rushed to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center for treatment.
As of 10:49 a.m. Saturday, Kapurelos remained in critical but stable condition, according to NBC10 Philadelphia. Route 47 South was closed for roughly four hours while crash reconstruction investigators worked the scene, during which bystanders and first responders rendered emergency medical aid to Kapurelos before he was transferred to the hospital, according to FOX 29 Philadelphia.
Kapurelos is a member of the Middle Township Police Department.
Suspect Faces DWI and Assault by Auto Charges
Police identified the driver as 36-year-old Lucio Lopez-Perez of Erma, New Jersey, who remained at the scene and was taken into custody on suspicion of impaired driving, per NBC10 Philadelphia. He was charged with driving while intoxicated, assault by auto, and violating public health and safety law resulting in serious bodily injury, police said. The crash resulted in no other reported injuries, according to the same report.
Following his arrest, Lopez-Perez was processed and booked on a criminal warrant into the Cape May County Correctional Center while also facing multiple traffic summonses, FOX 29 Philadelphia reported. Under New Jersey Statute 2C:12-1(c), driving while intoxicated and causing serious bodily injury elevates an assault by auto charge to a third-degree crime, carrying a potential sentence of three to five years in state prison upon conviction, according to Justia Law.
A Dangerous Stretch of Road Near Wildwood
Route 47 South, also known as Wildwood Boulevard, is a four-lane arterial corridor that cuts across coastal marshland to connect mainland Middle Township with barrier island resort communities, according to a Bureau of Ocean Energy Management report. The roadway sees heavy local and tourist traffic flowing toward Wildwood, and it has been the focus of regional enforcement efforts aimed at curbing dangerous driving.
In June, the Cape May County Prosecutor's Office created the SHIELD Task Force, a multi-agency initiative granting officers cross-jurisdictional authority to run targeted traffic enforcement details along high-risk roadways including Route 47, according to the Shore News Network. The outlet reported that an August 8 SHIELD operation across several roads, including portions of Route 47, resulted in 51 stops and two DWI arrests overall. New Jersey's Move Over Law also requires drivers approaching a stationary emergency vehicle with flashing lights to change lanes or slow below the posted limit, with fines ranging from $100 to $500 for noncompliance, per the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission.
Police Chief and Mayor Respond
Middle Township's police chief said he was grateful to those who aided Kapurelos and asked the community to respect his family's privacy during his recovery. Mayor Christopher M. Leusner said the community stands with Kapurelos and his family, adding that residents should never drive impaired.
Leusner brings a unique perspective to the moment: he is a former Middle Township police chief who took office as mayor in 2024, according to the Cape May County Herald. The department's Crash Investigation Team, which uses laser mapping and reconstruction tools for serious collisions, is working the case alongside the Cape May County Prosecutor's Office, according to the Middle Township Police Department.
The Middle Township Police Department and the Cape May County Prosecutor's Office are continuing to investigate the crash. Witnesses or anyone with relevant video is asked to contact the Middle Township Police Department at 609-465-8700.
