In a vibrant show of local pride, the City of Phoenix, Arizona, launched its first-ever celebration of 602 Day on June 2, 2024. This day was dedicated to commemorating the significance of the city's original area code, "602", showcasing the best of Phoenix through local deals and community events. The city's leadership, in partnership with over a hundred local businesses, curated a program that managed both to support local commerce and offer residents a chance to engage in the fabric of their community at discounted prices.
Mayor Kate Gallego was quoted in a city press release saying, "I am thrilled to declare the first official 602 Day an incredible success.” Gallego attributed the success of the event to family-friendly programs at iconic locations, the revenue boon for local businesses, and the sense of unity it fostered among residents. Additionally, the city took the occasion to anoint its first official city cocktail, further capturing the celebratory spirit. Despite the June heat, which is typically a herald of a slower business season for the valley, local businesses like Valley Coffee Company saw an unexpected uptick in patronage and sales, reporting a 34% increase from the previous Sunday, according to co-owner Donny Peper.
Businesses weren't the only entities to revel in the celebratory air of 602 Day. The Arizona Diamondbacks and other renowned institutions embraced the occasion, alongside service industries ranging from barber shops to wellness centers. Marisol Bovo, owner of Loving Hands Healing Hands, noted in an interview with city officials the event's unexpected impact on her business, bringing a slew lay of clients and other benefits. The Phoenix Zoo also saw an exceptional surge in attendance, with Vice President of Marketing, Communications and Events, Linda Hardwick, noting the zoo welcomed 9,347 guests on a day when the blistering heat would typically keep visitors at bay.
City departments also took part in the festivities. Phoenix Fire Department distributed 602 smoke detectors, and the Parks and Recreation Department gave out free t-shirts and water safety tips. Moreover, the Phoenix Public Library integrated the celebratory theme into its Summer Reading Program while senior centers across the city engaged members with 602-themed activities, such as the Memory Café session at the Desert West Senior Center and a mini-essay contest at the Paradise Valley Senior Center.
Looking ahead, the City of Phoenix is already preparing for next year's 602 Day, to be held on June 2, 2025. Local businesses and community members that want to get involved have been directed to bookmark 602Day.com for updates come spring 2025.
