Rockwall County is taking a stand against hazardous drivers with the introduction of the Hazardous Driving Enforcement Program (HDE). After alarming statistics were reported by Texas Peace Officer’s Crash Reports, which stated there were 15,299 serious injury crashes in Texas in 2022, the county law enforcement, led by Sheriff Terry Garrett, is looking to make the streets safer, according to Rockwall County, Texas.

Working with various police departments and the Texas Department of Public Safety, the HDE will initiate a crackdown operation for two months, targeting dangerous on-road behaviors. With reportable crashes happening every 57 seconds in the state and 1 person injured every 2 minutes and 9 seconds, as per the reports, the need for an intervention became urgently clear.

"The increased traffic in all parts of the county leads to more congestion, driver frustration, and subsequently, hazardous driving behaviors. The program aims to reduce accidents, promote safe driving habits through increased enforcement, educational programs, and build relationships with community members and local law enforcement", Sheriff Garrett said, as per Rockwall County, Texas, when speaking about the objectives of the HDE Program.

Patrols will be on the lookout for hazardous behaviors such as speeding, tailgating, running red lights and stop signs, reckless driving, distracted driving, and intoxicated driving. Alongside the enforcement, the HDE Program deputies are planning, that citizens and organizations will also receive educational programs about safe driving habits, intending to raise awareness and promote responsible driving behaviors to reduce the conflicts hazardous driving incidents bring.
