A Father's Day weekend in Saginaw has turned tragic with two fatal shootings leaving the community in mourning. In an incident that has become Saginaw's 11th homicide of the year, 25-year-old Daquan Mims was shot multiple times during a large gathering early Sunday morning. Despite immediate life-saving efforts, Mims succumbed to his injuries after being transported to an area hospital, according to ABC 12 News.
In a connected event, another 24-year-old man received treatment for a minor gunshot wound and has since been released from the hospital. Saginaw police officers, already on proactive patrol due to previous reports of large and disorderly crowds, heard the gunshots and found the scene chaotic with people scattering, as explained in a report from WNEM TV5 News. The police had been actively working to clear the crowd when the shooting occurred near the West Side Party Store on Hamilton Street.
The city's East Side was earlier struck by gun violence on Saturday, resulting in the death of 30-year-old Johnell S. Whittington near T&M Market. Police arrived at Genesee and Webber streets to find Whittington with gunshot wounds, and he later died at the hospital, as per MLIVE Michigan. This event marked the 10th homicide of the year for the city.
Saginaw's law enforcement is seeking the public's help to identify the shooters in both incidents. They are encouraging witnesses or anyone with information to step forward. Saginaw police Detective Martin Blank can be contacted directly at 989-759-1231 for information specifically related to Mims' death, while Crime Stoppers is also available for anonymous tips at 1-800-422-5245. The appeal for public assistance underscores the urgency to apprehend the suspects before any further violence unfolds.
