The Historical and Design Review Commission has recently given the green light for the conceptual design of a new Terry Black's Barbecue restaurant, including a courtyard, pit house, and an underground parking garage at 2100 Broadway St. This approval, granted on Wednesday, sets the stage for a new dining experience near San Antonio's Pearl district. According to a San Antonio Report, the site plans also reveal the possibility of adding a hotel to the property, though it is contingent upon a separate pending rezoning request before the City Council.
Despite lacking a clear timeline for development, property owner Mark Black confidently conveyed, "There will be a restaurant there," in a recent conversation. The excitement around the project has been building since January when initial site plans were submitted. Sharing its lot with the Alamo Colleges District headquarters, the restaurant is poised to become a new culinary anchor in the area, if plans proceed as the Black family envisions.
Mark Black, who operates the family-run business with his twin brother Michael, sister Christina, and their parents, Terry and Patti Black, communicated to the Express-News, "We bought what we think is a prime piece of real estate, and we want to maximize what we do with the land." The family's vision extends far beyond just barbecue, as plans include an unrelated restaurant concept within the same property. The Black family, well-versed in Texas barbecue, has established a firm presence with existing locations in Austin, Dallas, Waco, and Lockhart.
While Terry Black's Barbecue has carved its own identity, it is distinct from the Original Black's Barbecue, known for its long history since 1932. A family rift, culminating when Mark and Michael were directed by a cease-and-desist letter from their uncle Kent to change the name of their Austin venture, eventually led to the establishment of Terry Black's Barbecue in 2014. The brothers named their restaurant after their father, Terry Black.
As the Pearl area continues to burgeon with real estate developments, Terry Black's Barbecue's planned addition heralds a further expansion in the city's dining landscape. Oxbow Development, along with other enterprises, including Lynd, Opportunity Home San Antonio, GrayStreet Partners, Fulcrum Development, and McCombs Enterprises, are all contributing to the area's transformation with various projects ranging from apartments, offices, from hotels, to outdoor spaces.
