A San Mateo neighborhood was gripped by tension Thursday afternoon following a shooting that led to a swift police response and the temporary imposition of a shelter-in-place order. The San Mateo Police Department (SMPD) was alerted to gunshots at approximately 4:45 p.m. near the corner of East Hillsdale Boulevard and South Norfolk Street. A suspect was subsequently arrested after negotiations led to a peaceful surrender.
In the chaos that followed the gunfire, there was initial confusion about the number and location of victims. A police advisory stated that while it was originally believed there may have been multiple victims, authorities soon found there was only one, who had been transported from the scene to a local trauma center in San Carlos. This victim, whose condition at the time remains unreported, was initially thought to be related to another shooting victim discovered in Millbrae. However, investigators later determined that the incidents were not connected, as reported by the San Mateo Police Department.
Following the shooting, the SMPD launched an extensive search for the suspect, who was believed to have fled into a nearby apartment. According to CBS News San Francisco, police shared that after locating the apartment, officers were "able to negotiate a surrender." The identity of the apprehended individual has not been disclosed.
The law enforcement presence remained heavy in the aftermath, but residents were able to breathe a sigh of relief when the shelter-in-place directive was lifted around 7:30 p.m. Police remained on the scene well into the evening, working meticulously to process the area and collect evidence. Further details are expected as the investigation continues, with a press release anticipated to shed additional light on the day's harrowing events.
