The San Mateo Police Department will be manning a DUI checkpoint from 6:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. by Norfolk Street and Los Prados Street, aiming to curb impaired driving. This effort follows the troubling statistic that, nationally, drunk drivers are responsible for fatalities exceeding 10,000 individuals annually.
"Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk," said Traffic Sergeant Craig Collom, per the San Mateo Police Department, suggesting that such preventative measures are key to boosting traffic safety. Additionally, the department reminds the public that not just alcohol, but certain legal and prescription drugs can impact driving ability. With the legality of marijuana, medicinal or recreational, the police underscore that driving while high remains illegal.
Those found steering under the influence can expect repercussions not light on the wallet—an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, and that's not to mention the prospect of a suspended license. The financial setback matches the gravity of the offense and the potential loss and harm to the community.
With a nod to making our streets safer, the funding for the checkpoint comes from a grant provided by the California Office. Remember, folks, safety doesn't happen by accident. Plan your outings, and if there's drinking involved, also plan for a sober ride home.
