In the wake of a deadly shooting that claimed the life of a young adult near Alki Beach, Seattle Councilmember Rob Saka has organized a community meeting to discuss the pressing issue of public safety. Scheduled for tomorrow, June 26, from 6 PM to 7:30 PM, the gathering aims to open a dialogue between city officials and residents shaken by the recent violence. According to a statement obtained by Seattle Council's News Feed, Interim Police Chief Sue Rahr and citywide Councilmember Tanya Woo are among the diverse selection of leaders attending the event at Alki United Church of Christ.
The urgency of the conversation surfaces in the backdrop of the weekend's fatal shooting, where in addition to the 22-year-old killed, a 27-year-old was also left wounded and transported to the hospital. Councilmember Saka, moved by the incident, stated, "The gun violence playing out on our streets in unacceptable. It’s time for us to come together as a city and put a stop to it. Every enduring solution starts with an honest conversation." Determined to develop effective strategies for the safety of Alki and Harbor Avenue neighborhoods, those in power along with the community are hopeful the discussion will lead to tangible outcomes.
Other city leaders slated to speak at the community dialogue include Natalie Walton-Anderson, Director of Public Safety from the Mayor’s Office; AP Diaz, Superintendent of Seattle Parks and Recreation; Francisca Stefan, Senior Deputy Director; and Venu Nemani, Chief Safety Officer, both from the Seattle Department of Transportation. Members from the Seattle Police Department will also be present to participate in the conversation and listen to the concerns of their community.
For those interested in contributing to the discourse, there is an opportunity to submit questions or comments ahead of the event. Community members can voice their thoughts by completing a form provided on the council's website, which can be found here. Additionally, the gathering will accept questions or comments in person, ensuring a platform where all voices can be heard and potentially shaping the strategies that are to unfold.
