A tragic event unfolded Thursday evening in Southeast Houston when a police chase ended with a pedestrian being struck and killed. According to ABC13, the Houston Police Department was in pursuit of a fugitive wanted on several felony warrants and a shooting. The pursuit began around 8:20 p.m. at the intersection of Glenrose and Scott streets and spanned across the South Loop towards the 3400 block of Rebecca Street near the South Loop-Highway 288 interchange.
During the chase, the suspect, who was driving erratically and circling the area, fatally struck an older woman. The victim, reportedly using a walker, was innocently caught in the chaos and had no connection with the suspect. After the incident, the suspect abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot. Houston Police have yet to release a description of the fugitive and were last seen establishing a perimeter to aid in the manhunt.
An official statement was also released on the Houston Police Department's X account. "HPD Commanders and PIO en route to the 3400 block of Rebecca street in Southeast Houston where a pursuit has concluded after the suspect struck a pedestrian. More information at the scene." This candlelit echo of tragedy illuminates another instance of the collateral damage wrought by such urban chases—innocent lives caught in the unforgiving gears of circumstance and crime.
