Phoenix's Maricopa County Tabulation and Election Center has been thrust into the unwanted spotlight due to a reported theft on June 21, sparking a full-blown criminal investigation. According to FOX 10 Phoenix, the morning after the alleged incident, election workers discovered a missing item essential to the ballot tabulation process.
In response to the theft, the county elections officials took swift action to maintain the integrity of its electoral processes. The stolen item's recovery necessitated a reprogramming and logic and accuracy testing of all the election equipment, elaborated in a statement obtained by FOX 10 Phoenix. Details surrounding the crime remain scant, as the authorities have not released further information.
The theft's repercussions include more than just a breach of security; it carries a heavy financial toll on the county's resources. After the item was pilfered from the facility, all special secure tablets used during the election had to be reprogrammed as a proactive measure - a process that's estimated to rack up a bill of about $19,000 for Maricopa County, as described by 12News.
Looking ahead, the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office, with MCSO Sgt. Joaquin Enriquez confirmed that detectives were investigating further.
