Within a day of the incident, the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force deployed to track down and arrest the alleged shooter. The suspect was identified as 46-year-old Bryant Jerome Russell of Northeast, D.C. When the law caught up to Russell, a handgun was found in his possession.

Russell now faces multiple criminal charges, including Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (Gun), Possession of an Unregistered Firearm, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, and Possession of Unregistered Ammunition. During the investigation, it came to light that the victim and Russell were not strangers, but the nature of their prior acquaintance was not immediately clear in the official report provided by the police.
