A 21-year-old man suspected of driving under the influence and a family of three was hospitalized Sunday night following a crash in Renton, according to authorities. The incident occurred at Northeast 18th Avenue Northeast, with the driver of a blue pickup truck speeding and swerving before slamming into a parked vehicle. FOX13 Seattle reported that witnesses observed the truck's erratic movement leading up to the collision.
Renton police officers detected a "heavy odor of intoxicants in the suspect’s vehicle", which led them to apply for a warrant to conduct a blood test and confirm if the driver was indeed intoxicated at the time of the accident. Officers are also working to ascertain how far the parked car was moved upon impact, with estimates suggesting it was shoved about 100 feet. Details were provided in comments on a Renton Police Department (RPD) Facebook post and corroborated by KOMO News.
The road was temporarily closed in both directions as the investigation unfolded on Union Avenue. The case has since been handed over to the Traffic Investigations Division for further scrutiny. Injuries sustained by the family and the driver were not life-threatening, but all involved were transported to the hospital following the event.
Last night's incident serves as a grave reminder of the dangers posed by driving under the influence. As the community reflects on the narrow escape from a potentially more catastrophic outcome, the painstaking work of collision investigators continues, piecing together the sequence of events that led to this violent upheaval of a quiet Renton street.
