Tragedy struck in West Houston on Saturday, when a local resident opened fire on three individuals during a supposed home invasion, leaving all three dead. The incident occurred at approximately 3:10 p.m., in the 10500 block of Hammerly Boulevard, where the resident claimed to have been defending himself against intruders. The Houston Chronicle reports that the Houston Police Department is conducting a thorough investigation to unravel the events that led to the shooting.
Assisting Police Chief Wyatt Martin informed that, having been called to the scene after the resident's emergency call, officers found the front door intact but an interior door off its hinges upon their arrival; this information was obtained by ABC13. The identity of the deceased, two women and a man, is currently unknown, and officials are still verifying their identities. The shooter, who emerged from his apartment without necessitating force from arriving officers, claimed self-defense.
Historically, the officers had been dispatched to the same apartment on two earlier occasions, with at least one of these visits involving a mental health component, as told The Houston Chronicle. Despite these previous calls to the residence, the nature of the past incidents has not been fully disclosed, and how they might relate to the current case is still under deliberation.
In the midst of determining the circumstances surrounding the shooting, authorities are withholding speculation on the motives until the individual is interviewed more extensively. "The individual is claiming self-defense ... we still have a lot of investigating to do to determine what actually occurred," Martin said, highlighting the gravity of a scenario where lives are lost and the necessity of a rigorous investigation, as per a report by The Houston Chronicle. No arrests have been made as of now, as the resident shooter is cooperating with authorities, while detectives continue to canvass for witnesses and gather further evidence.
