As part of its upgrade process to introduce the new "Type 6" MAX trains, TriMet has announced a temporary closure of the Red Line service affecting the route between Gateway/NE 99th Transit Center and PDX. According to KPTV, the interruption, aimed at facilitating stress-free testing, is expected to carry on through six nights, from Sunday, June 16 to Friday, June 21. Tyler Graf, TriMet's Public Information Officer, told KPTV the new MAX cars are "top-of-the-line," promising riders a smoother and more efficient experience with improvements such as better lighting and displays.

With service disruptions beginning at 7:30 p.m. each night, travelers are to expect changes in their usual commute, especially those planning to go to or from the airport during these times. TriMet has arranged for shuttle buses to operate approximately every 10 minutes to help bridge the transport gap, yet advises passengers to allow up to an extra 30 minutes for trips. KOIN reports that the other MAX lines, including Blue, Green, Orange, and Yellow, will continue to run on regular schedules.

The forthcoming "Type 6" trains offer an array of new features. As KGW outlines, these enhancements include advanced digital signs for station alerts, optimized climate control for Portland's varied temperature extremes, and innovative LED lights that indicate door availability. These upgrades aim to enhance both the efficiency and the comfort of Portland's public transport system.

TriMet plans to officially roll the Type 6 trains into service later in 2024. These models incorporate improvements that are more than cosmetic; the predictive maintenance capabilities, improved on-board cameras, and advanced LED headlights are designed to not only raise the bar for passenger experiences but to also streamline the backend requirements for train upkeep. Importantly, after the June 21 tests, the Red Line should resume to normally scheduled programming, easing the temporary inconvenience burdening late-night travelers.
