The Housing First initiative in Tucson is reaching out to the local community, calling for volunteers to assist in assembling care packages for the homeless population. The effort, aimed at providing sustenance and basic necessities to those in need, is a part of a larger plan to support individuals facing the hardships of homelessness.

An announcement from the City of Tucson detailed the contents of these care kits, including non-perishable food items, water, and hygiene products. These packs are put together by volunteers and distributed by outreach workers associated with the Multidisciplinary Outreach Teams (MDOT), one of the gears turning within the larger Housing First machinery. Thelma Magallanes, the MDOT coordinator, highlighted the importance of the community's help in this task. "We aim to gather a group of 15 to 20 community members to help. The volunteer session is expected to last approximately 2 to 3 hours," Magallanes stated, in a statement obtained by Tucson's official Housing and Community Development webpage.

These volunteer activities take place at the El Pueblo Community Safety Hub building, just east of the Laos Transit Center. Tucson residents interested in contributing their time for a cause that directly impacts the well-being of their unhoused neighbors can find an opportunity to do meaningful work.

Volunteers are being scheduled at times that accommodate a variety of schedules, including Saturday mornings, as flexibility is key to maximizing community involvement. For those eager to lend a hand, Thelma Magallanes can be reached at her email, [email protected], or by phone at 520-651-8017, to schedule a slot in one of these sessions.
