Tragedy struck a Juneteenth celebration in Round Rock, Texas, this weekend, leaving a community in mourning amidst what was meant to be a commemorative event. According to KSAT, two individuals were killed and six people were injured, including two children, when gunfire erupted at Old Settlers Park late Saturday evening.
Details provided by Yahoo News Australia, indicate that the shooting began after a confrontation between two groups during a concert at the Juneteenth event, a day that is marked each year on June 19th to remember the emancipation of enslaved individuals in the U.S. Police Chief Allen Banks of the Round Rock Police Department said that the altercation led to someone, unleashing bullets near a vendor area, which lay a distance from the concert's main stage.
Tragically, neither of the two individuals pronounced dead at the scene were involved in the initial argument that incited the violence. Chief Banks told KSAT "It breaks your heart for a family that was coming out to enjoy their evening and now their life is forever changed as a result of somebody who could care less about somebody else's life,”
Law enforcement, as well as fire department personnel who were already present at the Juneteenth celebration, provided emergency medical care to the wounded before they were transported to local hospitals with potentially serious injuries. While the police have yet to apprehend a suspect and the number of shooters remains unknown, the investigation is ongoing, according to statements made by Chief Banks. The search for answers continues as authorities piece together the events of that night.
