Attention Atlanta commuters and trail enthusiasts: Starting June 9, a key intersection in the heart of the city will be undergoing significant construction. Atlanta BeltLine Inc., in a joint effort with the City of Atlanta and Atlanta Department of Transportation, has announced that the 10th Street and Monroe Drive crossroads will be fully closed for several days this month. According to a recent update from the Atlanta BeltLine, this closure is critical for the development of the Northeast Trail – Segment 1, a project designed to make the area more navigable and safer for bikers and pedestrians. If you regularly pass through this area, plan for detours and delays.
The full closure will commence on the evening of June 9th and is scheduled to last until the evening of June 14th. However, in case Mother Nature doesn't cooperate, the closure has a backup window set from June 16th through June 20. During this time, the BeltLine has prepared a series of detours—trail users and motorists will be redirected via Kanuga to Virginia and Charles Allen to 8th Street to navigate around the construction site.
But that's not the end of the roadwork. Once the intersection reopens, Atlanta BeltLine Inc. has warned that single-lane closures will follow, slated to happen Monday through Friday, and between the hours of 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. These intermittent disruptions are part of the grand plan to finalize sidewalk enhancements, with completion aimed for September.
These planned updates come as part of the much-anticipated completion of the Northeast Trail – Segment 1, targeted for late fall 2024. Designed to improve the thoroughfare for those traveling on foot or by bike, the project exemplifies the city's ongoing commitment to pedestrian and cyclist infrastructure. While the temporary inconvenience may perplex drivers and trail users alike, the outcome promises a safer and more accessible Atlanta for all.
