A Washington D.C. man has been sentenced to a significant 15 years in prison after a series of violent offenses against his former romantic partner. Barrington Hart, 36, faced Judge Jason Park who handed down the 180-month sentence, coupled with five years of supervised release, after Hart was found guilty on March 15, 2024. His charges included assault with a dangerous weapon, possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, and other related offenses—marking a serious response to domestic violence entwined with firearm abuse, as reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office.

According to a press release from the U.S. Attorney's Office, the prosecution presented evidence of two separate incidents from July 2023 where Hart assaulted the victim following disagreements, one resulting in the victim needing nine staples to treat a laceration caused by Hart striking her with a firearm, and another where Hart had pointed the same weapon at her after slapping her; afterwards, she sought medical care alone.

Hart's manipulation efforts didn't cease with his detainment, as detailed in the court documents. He used video visits from the Department of Corrections to instruct the victim against testifying and sent her threatening text messages, a move that ultimately did little to sway the legal proceedings against him. His post-arrest behavior only added more obstruction of justice and threats to the litany of charges he faced.

U.S. Attorney Matthew Graves and MPD Chief Pamela Smith praised the Metropolitan Police Department's thorough investigation that led to Hart's conviction and commended the prosecution team. They also acknowledged Assistant U.S. Attorney Bryan Han, Paralegal Tiffany Jones, and Victim/Witness Advocate Tracey Hawkins, among others, for providing strong support and advocacy for the victim throughout the legal process.
