Residents in Washington D.C. and surrounding areas brace for potential flash flooding as the National Weather Service issues a Flood Watch and a Coastal Flood Advisory early this morning. The NWS alert spans from noon today through this evening, cautioning of heavy showers and thunderstorms that could lead to excessive rainfall and subsequent flash flooding.

The National Weather Service's forecast indicates an 80% chance of precipitation today with new rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. Urban areas in the Washington DC and Baltimore Metro areas are particularly at risk, and citizens are advised of scattered instances of flash flooding.

In the coastal regions, the advisory remains in effect until 9 AM EDT this morning, with certain low-lying areas expected to see up to a half foot of inundation above ground level due to tidal flooding. Impacted locations could include sections of the seawall adjacent to Ohio Drive and the Hains Point Loop Road, and near the Tidal Basin. Water may also approach the curb near the intersection of King Street and Strand Street in Alexandria.

According to the hazardous weather outlook, there is also the potential for isolated severe thunderstorms capable of producing damaging wind gusts and even a tornado or two. The National Weather Service states, "A Flood Watch is in effect for the Washington DC and Baltimore Metro areas from noon today through tonight. Multiple rounds of, heavy showers and thunderstorms could produce scattered instances of flash flooding in urban areas."

All residents are encouraged to prepare for the adverse conditions, take necessary precautions to protect property, and stay informed on the latest weather updates. The National Weather Service advises against traveling through flooded roads and reminds the public to be prepared to take action should Flash Flood Warnings be issued.
