The Red-Headed Stranger himself, Willie Nelson, is taking a short hiatus from his latest "Outlaw Music Festival Tour," bowing out of performances this weekend due to health concerns. On Friday, a social media announcement relayed that the 91-year-old country icon is "not feeling well" and will need to strictly follow doctor’s orders to rest, CBS Austin reported.
According to the announcement, Nelson was directed by his doctor to resolutely take a break for the next few days, with the singer expected to "make a quick recovery and join the Outlaw Music Festival tour next week," KXAN reported. The unfortunate turn of events unfolded just hours before Nelson was due to charm attendees on the opening night of the tour in Alpharetta, Georgia, a revelation that was likely to disappoint many of his fans looking forward to catching the legendary performer live.
In lieu of Nelson's presence, his son Lukas Nelson along with the Family Band stepped in to fill the void. They are billed to play a special set that will feature Willie Nelson's beloved classics and likely some surprises to delight the crowds. As the elder Nelson takes the necessary time off to recuperate, his son and the band seem fully prepared to keep the Nelson musical legacy alive on stage.
Despite Nelson's absence, the tour is set to continue with its other scheduled acts. Industry giants such as Bob Dylan, Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, and Celisse are still slated to perform their sets as planned. An announcement on what has been colloquially coined as "X," the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, confirmed that these artists are poised to please the audience with their performances, KXAN notes.
As the weekend rolls ahead without the country maven, fans are encouraged to hold onto their hats for Nelson’s prospective return next week. The tour, which had promised the experience of Nelson's unique blend of country and activism, will, for now, have to lean on its impressive line-up and the legacy of its main act until he is well enough to take the stage once again.
