A 10-year-old boy, identified as Cortinez Logan, tragically passed away following a rescue operation on South Mountain. The incident occurred on July 2, as Logan suffered heat-related complications during a hike. According to FOX 10 Phoenix, the boy collapsed a mile up the trail and emergency services were called to the scene around 2 p.m.
Efforts to quickly bring Logan down from the mountain involved a helicopter, as stated by Phoenix Fire officials. After being transported by ambulance, the boy later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital, as per reporting from ABC 15.
Logan and his family had recently moved to Phoenix from Missouri and may not have been acclimatized to the extreme heat of the Arizona summer, a factor that Cpt. Todd Keller of the Phoenix Fire Department highlighted that can be gravely underestimated by newcomers. "It affects everyone," Keller told FOX 10 Phoenix, emphasizing the widespread impact such tragedies bear on the community and first responders.
