In a recent bust by the San Diego Human Trafficking Task Force, 14 individuals were arrested, and ten victims were rescued during an anti-human trafficking operation at the San Diego Comic-Con Convention. According to an official statement from California Attorney General Rob Bonta's office, the sting was specifically timed to coincide with the event, which draws more than 100,000 fans yearly.

Attorney General Bonta highlighted the unfortunate reality of these large conventions being used by traffickers for exploitation. "These arrests send a clear message to potential offenders that their criminal behavior will not be tolerated," said Bonta, as per the Office of the Attorney General. The task force, which is a collaboration of multiple agencies, conducted undercover operations to identify sex buyers and traffickers.

This operation was a testament to the commitment of local law enforcement to protecting vulnerable populations. San Diego Sheriff Kelly Martinez described human trafficking as an “insidious crime,” and San Diego Police Chief Wahl acknowledged the collective dedication to bringing criminals to justice. "This successful operation recovered 10 victims of human trafficking, including a girl of just 16 years old", Wahl remarked, emphasizing the gravity of the situation, per the Office of the Attorney General.

The effort, which involved posing as sex buyers and posting undercover advertisements soliciting sex, led to the arrests and the recovery of nine adults and one 16-year-old juvenile victim who were offered support services. According to a press release from the California Department of Justice, Child Welfare Services and victim support advocates were on hand to provide immediate assistance. A range of authorities including Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) were involved, with HSI's acting special agent in charge Christopher Davis asserting a zero-tolerance stance on exploiting minors at events like Comic-Con.

The SDHTTF's multi-agency approach is designed to address the complexities of human trafficking. The operation's success reflects the collaborative efforts of various organizations, such as the DOJ, FBI, HSI, and local police departments, coming together with a shared goal of stamping out human exploitation and providing relief to those ensnared by these criminal networks.
