In a disturbing turn of events in Unincorporated St. Petersburg, a 14-year-old has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder following a fatal shooting incident. Reports from the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office confirm that deputies responded to a call at the intersection of 27th Street North and 59th Avenue North on July 25, where they discovered 39-year-old Leslie Fernandez with gunshot wounds. Despite life-saving efforts, Fernandez was pronounced dead after being transported to a hospital.
The investigation quickly led to Jaevion Darrell Harvey, who was seen fleeing the scene on a bicycle. A day later, a search at Harvey’s residence unearthed not just the firearm used in shooting, but also an assortment of weapons, significant quantities of drugs, and cash. During an interview with detectives, Harvey confessed to shooting Fernandez at random, claiming he acquired the firearm from his father, Jarvis Spencer’s, bedroom. Spencer, with a criminal record tallying 15 felony convictions, was uncooperative during the ordeal and now faces multiple charges related to firearms and drug trafficking.
Harvey, the young suspect, has been taken to the Pinellas Juvenile Assessment Center and is facing charges for the murder of Leslie Fernandez. Meanwhile, his father, Spencer, has been brought to the Pinellas County Jail facing a slew of charges including possession of a firearm by a felon and armed trafficking in controlled substances. The next of kin for Fernandez have been notified, and authorities report that the investigation is ongoing. The gravity of the situation raises critical concerns over youth's involvement in violent crimes and the accessibility of firearms in households with a history of criminal activity.
It is a sobering reminder of the harsh realities that intertwine the lives of the very young with those of hardened criminals, prompting a discourse on the intersection of juvenile delinquency, family dynamics, and societal responsibilities. Community members and law enforcement alike stand in the wake of this tragedy, continuing to piece together the events that led to a senseless death and the arrest of a child not yet old enough to drive.
