More than two decades after a triple homicide rocked a San Diego community, the man responsible for the deaths of three people, including a young child, has been sentenced to life in prison without parole and an additional 75 years. The San Diego District Attorney's Office stated that Sergio Contreras, now 47, was the gunman in a 2000 Labor Day shooting, which ended in the tragic death of Michael Plummer, 27, Adah Pearson, 18, and 22-month-old Julio Rangel Jr.
The case initially went cold after Contreras fled, and it wasn't until seven years later, when new witnesses came forward, that Contreras could be formally charged with the murders, a long wait for the victims' families.
San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan was quoted as saying, "When a murder is unsolved for decades, it takes an enormous toll on the victim’s loved ones, but now the families of Michael Plummer, Adah Pearson, and Julio Rangel Jr. have a measure of justice after many years of mourning their loss." Stephan acknowledged the relentless work of the DA's Cold Case Unit and San Diego Police Department detectives, who played a key role in finally solving this case, as per the San Diego County District Attorney's Office.
Contreras was extradited from Mexico, where he had been serving time for unrelated crimes, and was brought back to the United States to face charges for the three murders. Brought to justice because of continuing efforts even after many long years had passed since the crime was originally committed, this persistence underlines the case's gravity and the victims' families' need for closure. Deputy District Attorney Chris Lindberg, who prosecuted the case, spoke about the diligence that went into the investigation.
