California homeowners are facing a potential sharp increase in their insurance rates as Allstate, a major insurer in the state, seeks approval for an average jump of 34% in their premiums. This requested rate hike is poised to affect over 350,000 policyholders and follows a previously attempted increase of 39.6% last year, which was later amended to the current request of 34.1%, according to ABC7. Allstate cites a combination of factors for this increase, including soaring repair costs and frequent severe weather events.
Consumer advocacy groups like Consumer Watchdog are critical of the insurer's methods, particularly about transparency, "Allstate is using secret algorithms to decide whether homeowners are at high risk of wildfire and how much they will pay," Consumer Watchdog President Carmen Balber said in a statement obtained by KTLA5, expressing concern over the lack of clarity provided to consumers regarding the basis of their premium calculations. Since last year, Allstate alongside State Farm has ceased writing new property insurance policies in California, which creates an additional hurdle for new homeowners and further complicates the market.
Residents like Hari and Diana Barnes from Tujunga are already feeling the pinch of the rising costs where they've seen their insurance premiums rise dramatically from $1,000 to $10,000 annually. "We have shopped around. It's not for the best rate, it's for anyone who will insure us," Diana revealed in an interview with ABC7. These drastic increases place significant financial strain on homeowners who are seeking viable insurance options in a market growing increasingly exclusive.
In response to the climbing rates, Balber has advised homeowners to investigate potential discounts available such as those for updating their roofs or clearing surrounding vegetation to mitigate fire risks, she stated this to ABC7 as well, but this comes as cold comfort for many who may already be undertaking such measures, yet still find their premiums skyrocketing without clear rationale or recourse. Allstate's request for this rate increase remains under review.
