As the United States gears up to celebrate its independence, Anne Arundel County's Department of Aging and Disabilities has announced that all senior activity centers will be temporarily shutting doors to honor the federal holiday. On Thursday and Friday, seniors seeking community and camaraderie will have to look elsewhere, as Independence Day observances mean a pause in the daily hustle and bustle of these local hubs, as per Anne Arundel County.
To the dismay of many, this will also mean a cessation of transportation services that many seniors rely on to get to and from these centers. The department has been clear, don't plan to catch a ride to the activity centers on these days, because the buses won't run. Those with transportation queries can still reach out directly to the department at 410-222-0022, despite the temporary service halt.
The range of services affected does not stop with in-person activities. The county has confirmed that virtual classes and Senior Center Plus programming will also not occur, leaving the county's older residents to find alternative forms of engagement and learning during the holiday closure. Furthermore, the seniors who benefit from the Senior Nutrition Program will find their routine disrupted, as lunch will not be served at any of its sites on those dates, although congregate sites will receive lunch on Friday.
Understanding that such closures can significantly impact the county's elderly population, the Department of Aging and Disabilities is open to communication for those needing accommodations during this time. They urge anyone with concerns to get in touch by calling 410-222-4257. TTY users are encouraged to call via Maryland Relay 7-1-1, ensuring that all community members have the opportunity to adequately prepare for the temporary changes.
