In a clear demonstration of community solidarity, Nicky Crawford, a retiree in Atlanta has transformed his golden years into a crusade against homelessness, by providing free mobile shower and laundry services to the city’s unhoused population. Crawford’s initiative, "Flowing with Blessings," seeks to address the rising number of homeless individuals in Atlanta, a city described by Fox 5 Atlanta as experiencing an uptick in its street dwellers.
The organization, founded several years ago, has been a beacon of support, offering showers, clothing, and food to those in need. With the addition of a laundry service stationed in a repurposed school bus, Crawford hopes to maintain the dignity and mental well-being of his clients. Explaining the impact of his work, Crawford said, "Mentally, it makes a difference that they know they are clean," according to Fox 5 Atlanta. The laundry bus is conveniently placed outside Grady Memorial Hospital twice a week, helping at least 50 people each day.
The Skanner reported the collaborative efforts that made this project a reality. Crawford partnered with Georgia Tech's student-led engineers, who helped turn his vision of a mobile laundry room into a physical service. These students brought an innovative approach, ensuring that the converted bus provided a much-needed service for the homeless, a setup that was unveiled at a recent Juneteenth community event.
Crawford's motivation stems from a personal recognition of fortune and faith. "What we’re trying to do is get them clothes they can have for the week so they can change clothes because a lot of times it’s not them that smell, it’s the clothes…," Crawford told The Skanner. Showing a profound connection to his work, he aims to expand this project, making cleanliness and basic hygiene accessible to all unhoused individuals. Crawford’s efforts are funded in part by his own investments, though "Flowing with Blessings" operates as a registered nonprofit seeking external support to grow its services.
Atlanta's homeless are finding solace and support in services like these. One recipient, Alex Calderon, described the initiative as a critical boost to his confidence, emphasizing the significance of such basic amenities that many often take for granted. "It brings a little bit of confidence, every time I come here, I try to keep myself as clean as I can," Calderon stated in an interview with Fox 5 Atlanta. Through Crawford's vision and community collaboration, Flowing with Blessings continues to uplift some of Atlanta's most vulnerable, one laundry load at a time.
