Buckhead residents experienced an unwelcome interruption yesterday afternoon when a water main break disrupted services and impacted roadways. Atlanta’s Department of Watershed Management swiftly responded, pinpointing a 2-3 foot crack in an 8-inch water main as the culprit. According to WSB Radio, service was restored later that evening around 8:30 p.m., after outages affected five apartment complexes and two fire hydrants. Among them the Grandview and Kingsbury Luxury Apartments.
Atlanta Watershed Management confirmed that despite rapid restoration efforts, their work isn't quite over yet, with road closures still in effect at the intersection of Kingsboro Road NE and Lakeside Drive NE. Residents, like Molly Braswell, were startled by the sudden influx of water, describing it as looking "like a river flowing down the street," in her statement obtained by WSB Radio. The Atlanta Department of Transportation has issued detours for motorists while repairs are underway.
This incident follows on the heels of a series of water main breaks in downtown Atlanta and Midtown in June that led to multiple days of upheaval, including a city-wide boil water advisory. Concerns remain among citizens, wary of a repeat scenario, especially learning from a Department of Watershed Management presentation that 16 percent, of the city’s water mains are over 75 years old. Amidst the turmoil, urgent questions emerge about the aging infrastructure beneath Atlanta's streets.
Atlanta DOT, as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta, has actioned several road closures, with local access maintained for affected areas. Detours and temporary traffic patterns aim to mitigate congestion as teams work diligently to complete the necessary repairs. Friday morning saw some relief as roads reopened, though officials note that intermittent closures may still occur, to finalize the project.
