Austin's weekend kicked off to a scorching start with temperatures soaring nearing record levels. According to the National Weather Service, today's forecast predicts sunny skies with a peak temperature of about 98 degrees. The stillness of the morning was briefly disturbed by a gentle east breeze, which is expected to continue intermittently through the afternoon. Tonight, the sky is expected to remain mostly clear with the temperature dipping to a comfortable 76 degrees.
Despite the current high-pressure system in place bringing in heat, the weekend will not completely escape the clutch of precipitation. A flood advisory was put into effect earlier in the day for the San Marcos area after significant rainfall was recorded at the San Marcos Municipal Airport. Reports from KXAN's weather coverage indicated that this weather anomaly was attributed to showers and thunderstorms that might still affect areas along Highway 77 in Fayette and Lee Counties, as rains from the Gulf's sea breeze come ashore.
Looking forward, the local weather trend is set to shift as Central Texas braces for scattered showers and storms. Sunday promises a 20 percent likelihood of rain, primarily in the afternoon. With the temperature slightly dropping, the high is forecasted to be near 96, sporting intense heat index values as high as 101. The upcoming work week is poised to sustain this pattern, with rain chances increasing from 60 to 70 percent between Monday and Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service's week-long outlook.
Indeed, these rains are not expected to persist all day but are to occur in a scattered fashion, aiding to relieve some of the stress from the relentless summer sun. Moreover, flood threats are on the horizon, with KXAN advising residents of a Marginal (Level 1 of 4) flood threat north of Austin for Sunday. This threat level is then set to rise slightly (Level 2 of 4) for the greater part of the region come Monday and Tuesday.
As temperatures persist at elevated levels, KXAN has reported on community efforts to mitigate the risks related to heat exposure. The 2024 Summer Fan Drive, organized by Family Eldercare and partnered with KXAN, is actively seeking donations to provide cooling fans to those in need. Following a successful event on Friday, the initiative continues to appeal to the public for contributions, emphasizing the danger of heat-related illnesses during such intense heatwaves.
