As Hurricane Beryl made landfall near Houston, the Austin Humane Society (AHS) has been working diligently to carry out animal evacuations and is now seeking the community's aid to ensure the safety and welfare of dozens of animals amidst the threat of the storm. According to a report by KVUE, the society took in 96 dogs and cats from areas affected by Beryl and is currently housing them at their Emergency Pet Shelter, which was activated on July 6 in anticipation of the storm's impact.

These animals, ranging from puppies to adult dogs and cats, are receiving necessary medical aid and care, and many are already up for adoption or fostering—a call that AHS is extending to the community as reported by CBS Austin; the needs of the animals are still being assessed in efforts to have them all ready for adoption soon but the first to have settled in are already available for adoption as of Sunday, a key step in their journey to finding permanent homes.

The Austin Humane Society has made it easy for those interested in helping to step forward with a variety of options. Prospective fosters are invited to email [email protected] for the opportunity to house an adult dog temporarily, while potential adopters can visit the shelter's website to view animals ready for a forever home. AHS has also listed tangible means of assistance through an online wishlist posted on Amazon, which notably includes items like dog treats, rope toys, and probiotic supplements to contribute to the ongoing care of their shelter guests.

Furthermore, the shelter has given an opportunity to those unable to physically adopt or foster but who still wish to contribute, by accepting monetary donations through their website to aid in the relocation, housing, and eventual permanent placement of their evacuees, as mentioned on their Facebook post and echoed by their call for financial assistance to support these 96 shelter animals care. The Austin Humane Society at 124 W. Anderson Lane remains open daily from noon until 7 p.m., welcoming all who can offer any form of support during this crucial time of need as the first of the rescued animals begin to find their way to the possibility of new homes away from the storm's shadow.
