The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office is currently investigating a death that came to pass while in custody at Sarasota Memorial Hospital early Monday yesterday morning. The individual, identified as Stephen Edward Hudek, originally of North Port and born June 23, 1962, had earlier been transferred from the Sarasota County Jail for medical treatment at SMH.
The precise reasons for Hudek's admission cannot be divulged due to HIPAA privacy constraints. Sheriff's deputies were assigned to closely monitor Hudek for the duration of his stay at the medical facility. Authorities have stated that deputies are to always accompany inmates to any healthcare settings, a measure designed to ensure to maintain custody and provide security.
Hudek was declared deceased at 2:47 a.m. yesterday after resuscitation efforts by the hospital staff and a sheriff's deputy proved futile. Initial investigations reveal no conspicuous signs of trauma and nothing ostensibly suspicious related to the death. "The case remains an active investigation pending the report from the Medical Examiner’s Office," as cited from a statement on Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office website.
