According to a statement released by the Baltimore Mayor's Office, the planned public event posed potential risks to ongoing litigation related to opioids, litigation which the office claims is on the verge of a significant victory. The cancellation subsequently sparked a public back-and-forth with Councilman Conway whose response to the cancellation was labeled by the mayor's office as putting his image above the wellbeing of the city's residents.
Instead of the public hearing, the statement explained that the Mayor's office had offered private briefings to Councilman Conway which would provide detailed updates on the fight against the opioid crisis without jeopardizing the pending lawsuit. Conway reportedly agreed to this arrangement initially, but the Mayor’s Office alleges that he went back on his word, "Councilman Conway’s statement regarding this cancellation is categorically false," their public communiqué reads, a further critique emphasizing that, "The Councilman cares more about his profile than doing what is best for Baltimore’s residents", as detailed by the City of Baltimore press release.
