On the solemn occasion marking one year since the Brooklyn Homes mass shooting—a harrowing event that claimed the lives of young Aaliyah Gonzalez and Kylis Fagbemi and wounded 28 others—Mayor Brandon M. Scott, representing the Mayor's Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement (MONSE) and the Scott Administration, released a poignant statement. "One year after the horrific mass shooting at Brooklyn Homes, the scars and trauma that it caused continue to ripple through our entire city," Mayor Scott said, according to the City of Baltimore.
The mayor acknowledged the deep wounds inflicted upon the community, recognizing the psychological and physical harms that remain unhealed. The city of Baltimore, profoundly changed by this tragedy, has initiated neighborhood stabilization efforts, fortifying relationships with residents and organizations in a collective pursuit of healing. In a bid to actively reassure the residents, Scott affirmed, "Deep trauma of this nature is not something we can heal overnight, but I will reaffirm the commitment we made a year ago – we will continue showing up for one another forever", as detailed by the City of Baltimore.
While remembrance was central to the day, Mayor Scott was adamant that work remains to be done. Ongoing support services and the continual presence of authorities are part of the city's assurances to residents. "There is still work to be done. We continue to learn from and implement passages of the comprehensive After Action Report produced last summer", Scott said, highlighting the ongoing investigative and judicial processes related to the shooting, as per the City of Baltimore.
