In the wake of a disturbing assault in Federal Hill, residents took to the streets in a public safety walk alongside Baltimore Police Department officers, voicing their concerns over recent crime trends and demanding stronger community-police communication, as per report CBS News Baltimore.
According to Fox Baltimore, Tina Braun, and other residents are pushing for a proactive stance against crime, citing instances such as vandalism and theft, with Mrs. Braun emphasizing the community's role in calling the police upon witnessing crimes, especially following the late disclosure of a violent attack in late June where a woman was beaten and sexually assaulted.
The Federal Hill Neighborhood Association has been actively engaged in efforts to combat crime, highlighted by a camera network involving 250 households known as the 'South Baltimore Camera Network', these efforts have aided in solving crimes.
Major J. I. Bennett from BPD Southern District addressed the concerns during the walk, explaining the delay in alerting the community was not intentional while detectives balanced the investigation's needs with the victim's privacy, Chief Bennett told Fox Baltimore they had the information that they needed for the particular suspect, however, protesters still advocated for better communication with the police.
