Yesterday, Mayor Brandon M. Scott, along with Baltimore City Recreation & Parks (BCRP), announced a fresh name and significant upgrades for an urban greenspace in Northwestern Baltimore, according to a press release from the Mayor's office. The former Northwest Baltimore Academy, a site once shared by a school and police training facility, is flipping its script. Now dubbed 'The Fields at Pimlico Park,' the community’s old baseball diamond and multipurpose grounds are set to become a crown jewel for local recreation.
"As a son of Park Heights, it is powerful to see the transformation of this space and to know that it will serve generations of Baltimore’s young people," Mayor Scott expressed during the ceremony. The mayor emphasized his administration’s dedication to ensuring all Baltimoreans have ample access to quality outdoor spaces and recreation. The unveiling marks the culmination of an investment nearing $900,000, steered by ARPA and the Pimlico Community Development Authority (PCDA) funding, as detailed by the Mayor's office.
According to the press release, BCRP Director Reginald Moore detailed the city’s initiative to advance neighborhood-by-neighborhood, creating equitable investment in recreational amenities. "We’re committed to providing our residents with high-quality, state-of-the-art spaces and services that benefit their overall well-being," Moore stated. The park not only features upgraded fields but also boasts a new, cutting-edge playground—one of the twenty-three the city aims to install by the end of next year, with twenty fueled by ARPA funds.
Shamiah Kerney, Baltimore’s Chief Recovery Officer, highlighted the broader impact of such infrastructural enhancements. "Investing ARPA funds into our recreational facilities and parks not only revitalizes these spaces but also fosters a stronger sense of community and promotes healthier lifestyles for our residents," Kerney stated, as detailed by the Mayor's office press release. From now on, Pimlico Park will provide a modern, secure space where families can converge, kids can find fun, and the community at large can engage in active living.
The BCRP's Rec Rollout is pacing ahead with further announcements on deck for a series of groundbreaking updates across the city’s recreational sphere in 2024.
