A man was shot and killed Thursday night in the 500 block of North Lakewood Avenue in Southeast Baltimore, and as of Friday, police have not identified him or announced any suspects. Officers responded to the McElderry Park block around 8:40 p.m. and found the victim suffering from a gunshot wound; he was pronounced dead shortly after being rushed to a hospital.
According to CBS News Baltimore, officers were called to the scene following reports of gunfire in the residential block. The stretch of North Lakewood Avenue sits in McElderry Park, a dense East/Southeast Baltimore rowhome community that lies just north of Patterson Park and west of Ellwood Park, per Homes.com. The neighborhood falls under the Baltimore Police Department's Southeastern District, which operates out of headquarters on Eastern Avenue under District Commander Major Albert DellaRocco, according to the department's own command listings.
Detectives Appeal for Tips as Case Remains Open
No arrests have been announced in the shooting, and police have not released the victim's name. The BPD Homicide Section is asking anyone with information to call 410-396-2100, or to submit an anonymous tip through Metro Crime Stoppers of Maryland at 1-866-7LOCKUP, per WCBM News-Talk Radio.
The block has a grim history: on New Year's Day 2011, 16-year-old Marquis Hall was shot multiple times on the same stretch of North Lakewood Avenue and later died at Johns Hopkins Hospital, a case that was recorded as the city's second homicide that year, CBS Baltimore reported at the time. Thursday's shooting also echoes a March incident in which a man was found dead with a gunshot wound to the head in the 700 block of North Port Street, not far away in Southeast Baltimore, according to WBAL Radio. That case was among Hoodline's earlier coverage of pre-dawn violence in East Baltimore.
A Citywide Drop in Homicides, But Local Violence Persists
The shooting comes even as Baltimore continues to post historic declines in violent crime. City officials reported that July 2026 saw just seven homicides, the lowest total for that month in city history, contributing to a 25.9% drop in total homicides through early August compared with the same period in 2025, according to the Baltimore City Mayor's Office. Through the first six months of the year, the city recorded 50 homicides, the lowest mid-year total in its recorded history, alongside a 60% homicide clearance rate by BPD detectives, the Baltimore Police Department said.
Officers also seized more than 1,189 firearms, including 123 untraceable ghost guns, and made 743 gun-related arrests citywide between January 1 and August 1, per the Mayor's Office. Those 2026 numbers build on 2025, when Baltimore logged 133 homicides, a 31% drop from 194 the year before and the city's lowest annual murder total in nearly 50 years, according to the Maryland Daily Record.
Even so, fatal shootings have continued to surface along residential corridors in Southeast Baltimore. Hoodline has reported on a string of similar incidents in the area this year, including a deadly midnight shooting on Leverton Street in June and a shooting investigation on North Curley Street the same month. The pattern underscores why homicide detectives continue to lean on crime-scene forensics and community tips to close open cases, even as the citywide numbers trend downward.
