In an effort to bolster its economic growth, the City of Sandy Springs has tapped a local banking veteran to steer its development strategies. Announced recently, Chris Burnett, having called Sandy Springs home for 35 years, has been appointed as the city's new Director of Economic Development. Burnett is set to take charge on August 15, stepping into a role where he'll be deploying the Strategic Economic Development Plan (SEDP) across the city, according to a press release from the City of Sandy Springs.
Having served as a prominent figure in community banking for over 40 years, Burnett's background includes leadership roles at Eastside Bank & Trust, Horizon Bank, and Cornerstone Bank, along with founding Bank of Sandy Springs in 2013. Before becoming part of SouthState Bank through mergers, ensuring his involvement spans multiple dimensions of the local finance sphere. With hands-on governmental experience as a Sandy Springs City Councilman for District 3 from 2016 to 2021, an area executive for SouthState Banking, and service on several civic and community organizations, Burnett is poised to bring a broad perspective to his new position.
City manager Eden Freeman praises the new appointment, highlighting the shifting strategies of the city from new development to redevelopment. Freeman stated, "We are thrilled to welcome Chris to our team at Sandy Springs officially," emphasizing the keen focus on revitalization projects such as the North End and City Springs Phase II. "Chris' expertise will be vital," according to a statement acquired by Sandy Springs' communications.
Burnett's homegrown authority in the region adds a layer of community-based understanding to his economic development plans. With years managing SouthState’s northern Perimeter markets to his credit and also playing an instrumental role in the metro Atlanta Government Banking Group, his experience is expected to significantly contribute to Sandy Springs' standing among Metro Atlanta destinations. Serving currently on the Board of the Sandy Springs/Perimeter Chamber of Commerce, as well as being a board member for the Sandy Springs Civic Fund and Special Olympics of Georgia, Burnett is deeply entrenched in the local landscape. His selection marks a fusion of financial acumen and civic service, setting a precedent for a synergy that will mold the city's approach to fostering its economic environment.
