Last Friday, the Berkeley Police Department reported that a DUI and driver's license checkpoint was set up on Shattuck Ave at Parker St., where 1067 drivers were stopped and vetted for sobriety and proper licensing. According to the Berkeley Police Department, 28 individuals were cited for operating a vehicle without a license or with one that was suspended or revoked. Among those evaluated for driving under the influence, only one arrest was made, while the additional 28 drivers were released.

Checkpoints such as these are strategic in nature, crafted from the caution borne of statistics and locations with notable incidents of impaired driving-related crashes. According to the officials, the objective behind these checkpoints is to foster a safer community by ensuring potentially impaired drivers are removed from behind the wheel.

This recent checkpoint was funded through finance from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Moving forward, residents and drivers in the Berkeley area can expect another checkpoint to be established on August 29.
